Blog Entry #1: Filmmaker's Statement


My name is Kaylene Jackmore. I am a sophomore at UNCW, and I have recently declared Film Studies as my major.

In terms of prior experience, I have been making films since high school. From school projects to silly films with friends, I fell in love with the craft of filmmaking very quickly.

I first started making films in my telecommunications classes. I wrote many scripts, made music videos, short films, a pilot and treatment for a television series, and introductions for the high school's TV morning announcements.

After completing this course, I would like for my editing and teamwork skills to improve. Though I am familiar with the Adobe Premiere software, I did not get to do enough work editing my films. Additionally, in high school, I handled a lot of the work on my own, so I am not used to sharing responsibilities.

In the future, I would like to be a screenwriter. I'm also interested in editing and camera work. In ten years, I would like to have worked on television shows, movies, documentaries, and by the time I "retire" (does anyone really retire from this industry?), I want to have done everything there is to do in film.

My love for film is accompanied by my passion for writing. Besides scripts, I write short stories, novellas, and novels. In ten years, I would like to have been published in some form. I am currently trying to get published online, but I would like to have hardcopies of my work.

  • While I grew up in Lumberton, North Carolina, I graduated from high school in Pennsylvania, and I was born in Minnesota. 
  • My last name "Jackmore" comes from the Italian surname DiGiacomo. When my family immigrated to the United States in the nineteenth century, it was changed to sound more "American" in the hopes of finding a good job. 
  • I have never broken a bone.

Blog Entry #9: Master Shot Reflection

In the midst of making these projects, I accidentally mixed up the order of blog posts. I completely forgot to reflect on working with sound! When it comes to working with sound, I have never been a fan. Recording audio--good audio--is a bit harder than it looks. It takes a lot of patience and finess to make sure you are capturing the best audio and that background noises are not overpowering the dialogue. Because we decided to shoot our master shot scene in the Clocktower Lounge, I had to deal with the issue of high ceilings. The high ceilings created a bit of an echo and a lot of background noise was recorded. In post, I had to adjust the audio levels in order for the dialogue to be loud enough. This experience has made me realize that I prefer the processes of previsualization and editing in post-prodcution, but I still had a fun time working with my master shot scene group and learning more about sound recording.

Blog Entry #5: Reflection on vox pops. and b-roll

When it comes to filming, one should always expect for things to fall through and have a back up plan for such circumstances. Originally, my team and I planned to film vox pops. and get some b-roll footage at a restaurant called Tongy's. Unfortunately, we were unable to contact the owner, consequently leading us to be unable to film at said location. Instead we filmed the vox pops. and the rest of the b-roll at Gary's apartment. (We conducted our expert interview with Gary.) We originally planned for the vox pops. to include other drag queens, but instead our vox pops. consisted of Gary's close friends who have their own unique perspective on drag. Everyone was really friendly, and through the director's questions, we were able to capture a fraction of their character, which I think will translate interestingly on screen. Tonight we will have our documentary completed, so we will see!

Blog Entry #8: Editing Experience

For this project, I worked with the DP/editor to edit the Master Shot Scene. Due to what I accomplished in high school, I have a lot of experience using Adobe Premiere Pro. When editing the Master Shot Scene, I helped the DP/editor use Premiere Pro and I showed her a large portion of the skills I have acquired over the years. I love to edit, and I enjoyed helping the DP/editor with the assignment. When we first started, we realized we had to reshoot a majority of the footage due to improper lighting and lack of shot composition. After we reshot the scene with better lighting, the DP/editor and I were able to edit the scene. Since I was in charge of sound for this project, I picked the music used in addition to working with the audio. This experience was the most fun for me, and I realized that I much prefer the stages of post-production over pre-production. Still, this was a fun project and I enjoyed working with my teammates very much on this assignment.
