Documentary Interview Plan

The subject of our documentary is drag queens. We want to showcase the diverse personalities of queens.

Our expert interview will be a man named Gary, his drag queen persona being Adrenaline. 

We will shoot at Gary's apartment and at a club called Tongy's. 

We want to set a fun, lighthearted tone for our documentary. There will also be a bit of humor in the interview as I have been told that Gary will more likely than not make a joke or two, which we encourage. We want the world to see that drag queens are not "men who want to be women." We want them to see that anyone can be a drag queen.

13 questions for our expert interview:

  1. What is drag to you?
  2. How did you get into drag? 
  3. Who inspired you the most to do drag?
  4. Who are your favorite queens?
  5. Do you think the public will be more accepting of drag in the future?
  6. What do you think is the future for drag?
  7. What is your advice for those who want to do drag?
  8. Do you think you could ever make a career out of it?
  9. How do you balance life and drag?
  10. Do you think there needs to be a healthy distance for drag life and normal life?
  11. How much time goes into drag?
  12. Do you think the community could be more straight forward in the sense of getting the word out that you all are here and ready to entertain?
  13. What is the meaning of drag family to you?


We will do our vox pop questions at Tongy's. Our vox pop. questions:

  1.  Do you think drag will be more accepted in the future? 
  2. Would you do drag professionally if you could?
  3. Does your family approve of drag?
  4. Do you think anyone can do drag?

Blog Entry #9: Master Shot Reflection

In the midst of making these projects, I accidentally mixed up the order of blog posts. I completely forgot to reflect on working with sound! When it comes to working with sound, I have never been a fan. Recording audio--good audio--is a bit harder than it looks. It takes a lot of patience and finess to make sure you are capturing the best audio and that background noises are not overpowering the dialogue. Because we decided to shoot our master shot scene in the Clocktower Lounge, I had to deal with the issue of high ceilings. The high ceilings created a bit of an echo and a lot of background noise was recorded. In post, I had to adjust the audio levels in order for the dialogue to be loud enough. This experience has made me realize that I prefer the processes of previsualization and editing in post-prodcution, but I still had a fun time working with my master shot scene group and learning more about sound recording.

Blog Entry #5: Reflection on vox pops. and b-roll

When it comes to filming, one should always expect for things to fall through and have a back up plan for such circumstances. Originally, my team and I planned to film vox pops. and get some b-roll footage at a restaurant called Tongy's. Unfortunately, we were unable to contact the owner, consequently leading us to be unable to film at said location. Instead we filmed the vox pops. and the rest of the b-roll at Gary's apartment. (We conducted our expert interview with Gary.) We originally planned for the vox pops. to include other drag queens, but instead our vox pops. consisted of Gary's close friends who have their own unique perspective on drag. Everyone was really friendly, and through the director's questions, we were able to capture a fraction of their character, which I think will translate interestingly on screen. Tonight we will have our documentary completed, so we will see!

Blog Entry #8: Editing Experience

For this project, I worked with the DP/editor to edit the Master Shot Scene. Due to what I accomplished in high school, I have a lot of experience using Adobe Premiere Pro. When editing the Master Shot Scene, I helped the DP/editor use Premiere Pro and I showed her a large portion of the skills I have acquired over the years. I love to edit, and I enjoyed helping the DP/editor with the assignment. When we first started, we realized we had to reshoot a majority of the footage due to improper lighting and lack of shot composition. After we reshot the scene with better lighting, the DP/editor and I were able to edit the scene. Since I was in charge of sound for this project, I picked the music used in addition to working with the audio. This experience was the most fun for me, and I realized that I much prefer the stages of post-production over pre-production. Still, this was a fun project and I enjoyed working with my teammates very much on this assignment.
